Moat at Heidelberg Castle

Day 4 – Sunday July 19, 2020 – Rothenburg ob der Tauber

We depart Heidelberg for the medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a walled gem on the Romantic Road.  A local guide joins us for a walking tour.  We are transported back 500 years as we stroll pass half-timbered buildings and through narrow winding cobblestone streets.  We see the clockwork, a simple drama depicting the wager between Mayor Nusch and the beseiging General Tilly in 1631.  This event involving the consumption of an enourmous tankard of wine, spared the town from destruction during the Thirty Years War.  The highlight of our tour is a stop at St. Jakob’s Chruch to see the “Holy Blood Altar” created by Tillman Riemanscheider.  Later we have free time to shop, walk the well preserved ramparts, or climb the town tower for a commanding view of the city.  Perhaps tonight you would like to join the night watchman on tour.  Dinner is on your own. B

Day 5 – Monday July 20, 2020 – Garmisch

After breakfast, we board our coach and drive the Romantic Road stopping to explore the medieval towns of Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen to southern Bavaria.  We have time in Nordlingen for lunch and then continue south stopping for a photo opportunity at spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle which Disney modelled Snow White’s castle after.  We end the day in Garmisch our home for the next 2 nights.  B/D

Day 6 – Tuesday July 21, 2020 – Garmisch

This morning might be the highlight in Garmisch Partenkirchen as an unforgettable experience awaits us.  We see the roof of Germany as we ride the cable car up the Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany.  For those who would like to hike down, you may do so – the rest of us will take the cable car back down.  B

Day 7 – Wednesday July 22, 2020 – Oberammergau

Today we head to Oberammergau.  First we stop at the Monastery of Ettel where we learn how the monks brewed beer and of course sample the beer and cheese.  We also visit Linderhof Castle build by (crazy) King Ludwig.  Built in the French Rococo style, Linderhof has a Moorish pavillion which can be visited during your one hour stay when joining a guided tour of the interior of the castle.  We have time to explore the grounds and see the grotto where Ludwig liked to listen to Wagner operas.  Following a castle tour, we drive a short distance to Oberammergau.  Once settled into our Oberammergau hotel, we have dinner together with free time in the evening.  B/D

Day 8 – Friday July 24, 2020 – Oberammergau

Today is the highlight of the tour, the world-famous Passion Play.  In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany vowed that if God spared them from the Bubonic Plague ravaging the region, the would produce a play for all time depicting the life and death of Jesus.  The play is performed repeatedly over the course of 5 months during every year ending in zero.  (the last time it was performed was in 2010)  In the afternoon and evening we watch the performance of the play with excellent pre-reserved seats.  B/L/D
