Our January 2026 GetAway Travel adventure to the Galápagos Islands was one of those rare experiences.

For ten unforgettable days, our group explored one of the most remarkable ecosystems on Earth. We spent time in Quito before boarding the beautiful Celebrity Flora for a week of discovery among volcanic islands, pristine waters, and wildlife found nowhere else in the world. While everyone arrived with high expectations, what surprised many of us was just how completely the experience exceeded them.

By the end of the trip, the most common comment wasn’t about the ship, the food, or even any single wildlife encounter. It was simply this:

“I’ve never experienced anything quite like it.”

 

An Unforgettable Welcome

Every great trip has a defining moment when anticipation gives way to reality. For our group, that moment happened almost immediately.

We had just boarded one of Celebrity Flora’s Zodiac boats for our first excursion. The excitement was obvious. Cameras were ready, binoculars were out, and everyone was eager to begin exploring the islands they had dreamed about for years.

Then, without warning, we found ourselves surrounded by dolphins.

Not a couple of dolphins in the distance, but an entire pod swimming alongside our Zodiac as we headed toward shore. They surfaced all around us, seemingly as curious about us as we were about them. The atmosphere instantly changed from excitement to amazement.

It felt like the Galápagos was welcoming us personally.

As magical as that encounter was, we had no idea it would only be the beginning. Over the next week, the islands would deliver one extraordinary wildlife experience after another.

Wildlife Is Everywhere

One of the biggest surprises for everyone on the trip was how accessible the wildlife was.

Many travelers assume wildlife viewing requires long periods of searching and waiting. In other destinations, spotting animals can depend on luck, patience, and being in the right place at exactly the right moment.

The Galápagos is different.

Wildlife is simply everywhere.

Whether we were hiking across volcanic landscapes, cruising through quiet bays, relaxing on a beach, or snorkeling offshore, animals were constantly present. More importantly, they seemed completely comfortable sharing their environment with visitors.

The abundance of life was unlike anything most of us had ever experienced.

One afternoon, while exploring a small bay by Zodiac, we approached a rocky outcropping that perfectly captured what makes the Galápagos so special. Standing on the rocks was a Galápagos sea lion and a flightless cormorant. As we watched, Galápagos penguins joined them.

Moments like that occurred repeatedly throughout the week. Every island seemed to have its own personality, and every excursion introduced us to something new.

Swimming With Sea Turtles

While the wildlife viewing from land was spectacular, some of my favorite memories came from the water.

Many people are surprised to learn that the snorkeling in the Galápagos can be quite accessible. On several excursions, we simply put on our gear and entered the water from the beach. There was nothing intimidating about it, which allowed everyone to focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

Once in the water, we found ourselves surrounded by schools of colorful reef fish. Sea lions zipped past us with remarkable speed and agility, appearing and disappearing before cameras could fully capture them. They seemed to treat the ocean as their personal playground.

Then came one of the most memorable experiences of the entire trip.

While swimming, I encountered several large sea turtles feeding peacefully beneath the surface. After grazing along the reef, they drifted effortlessly through the water. For a few moments, I was able to swim alongside them, observing them in their natural environment.

There was something incredibly calming about it.

Watching these ancient creatures move gracefully through the water offered a perspective that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget. Experiences like that are why people travel to the Galápagos from every corner of the globe.

More Than a Wildlife Vacation

People often ask how the Galápagos compares to other major bucket-list destinations.

After experiencing it firsthand, the comparison that comes to mind is an African safari.

The animals are entirely different, of course, but the feeling is remarkably similar. On safari, every drive holds the possibility of another unforgettable sighting. The Galápagos creates that same sense of anticipation and wonder.

The difference is the ecosystem.

Instead of lions, elephants, and giraffes, you’re encountering giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, penguins, blue-footed boobies, sea turtles, and countless species of birds. Every island offers something unique, and every day brings new discoveries.

Because nearly the entire region is protected as a national park, visitors also gain a deeper appreciation for conservation and the remarkable variety of life that exists on our planet. When Rocks Start Moving

Of all the wildlife encounters, one of the most unexpectedly amusing involved the famous marine iguanas.

As we approached shorelines around the islands, we often noticed what appeared to be clusters of gray rocks scattered along the black volcanic landscape.

Then they started moving.

What looked like part of the terrain suddenly revealed itself to be dozens, sometimes hundreds, of marine iguanas basking in the sun. Their coloring blends so perfectly with the lava rock that they virtually disappear until they crawl, stretch, or shift positions.

Adding even more color to the scene were Sally Lightfoot crabs. Their brilliant reds, oranges, and blues stood out against the dark rocks as they scurried about in every direction. Together, the iguanas and crabs created a landscape that seemed almost prehistoric.

At times, it felt like stepping into another world.

Meeting the Giants of the Galápagos

While the marine life was spectacular, no visit to the Galápagos would be complete without spending time with the animals that gave the islands their name.

The giant tortoises were every bit as impressive as we had imagined, and perhaps even more so. Photographs simply don’t prepare you for their size. These remarkable animals can weigh hundreds of pounds and live well over a century, moving through the landscape with a calm confidence that comes from having occupied these islands for millions of years.

One of our most memorable encounters took place on Isabela Island. Rather than viewing the tortoises from a distance, we found ourselves sharing the same pathways. More than once, a giant tortoise slowly crossed the trail directly in front of us, completely unconcerned by our presence. There was no rush, no drama, and certainly no way to hurry them along. In the Galápagos, the tortoises operate on their own schedule.

What struck many of us was their sheer presence. Standing just a few feet away from a creature that may have been alive before World War II, and could still be walking these islands decades from now, creates a sense of perspective that is hard to describe. They seem less like animals and more like living pieces of history.

 

As we watched them grazing, resting, and making their slow journeys across the landscape, it became easy to understand why Charles Darwin found the islands so fascinating. These giants are not simply symbols of the Galápagos. They are reminders of how unique and fragile this ecosystem truly is.

For many in our group, seeing giant tortoises in their natural habitat became one of the defining memories of the entire trip. It was one thing to read about them before arriving. It was something entirely different to stand quietly beside one and appreciate just how extraordinary these islands really are.

The Celebrity Flora Difference

The wildlife may be the star of the show, but Celebrity Flora deserves tremendous credit for making the experience so enjoyable.

Simply put, the ship overdelivered in every category.

The suites were spacious and comfortable, providing a welcome retreat after active days exploring the islands. The service was exceptional, and the crew consistently anticipated guests’ needs before they were even asked.

The dining experience was particularly impressive. Breakfast featured numerous made-to-order selections, while lunch introduced different culinary themes each day. Although lunches were served buffet-style, as is common on smaller expedition ships, they were among the finest we have experienced anywhere.

Dinner was equally memorable. Whether dining in the elegant main restaurant or enjoying a meal outdoors under a blanket of stars, every evening felt special.

One of the greatest assets onboard was the team of naturalists. Throughout the voyage, they helped bring the islands to life by explaining the animals, plants, geology, and history of the region. Seeing wildlife is incredible. Understanding why that wildlife evolved there and how it survives adds a whole new dimension to the experience.
